Tailwinds gives us a good feeling when riding a bike. With a tailwind, we feel supported and strengthened in our abilities, and make better progress. This is the feeling we want to create with the organization and that is why it has had this name since its founding in 2015.
As a non-profit association, we have set the goal of supporting people who have had to flee to Berlin by providing them with their own bicycle.
For this purpose, we collect donated bicycles in Berlin: bikes that are no longer needed, that have become too small, or that have simply been left behind in the many courtyards of Berlin. Every year we collect about 500 bicycles, of which we can repair 300-400 and pass them on. Bicycles that can no longer be repaired are stripped for spare parts.
We work with social organizations, primarily those working with people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, as well as youth. But individuals and families can also register with us for a bike. Registered individuals are put on a wait list and invited to pick up their bike one by one.
We can only operate with the help of volunteers from all over the world. Five days a week they learn with and from each other how to repair bicycles in our workshop. By working together, we create a community around bikes. From the 6 founding members in 2015, we have grown to a community of more than 120 people with diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Together we stand up for an open society, the right to repair, and sustainable, affordable mobility for all.
