I am a refugee and I need a bike. What do I have to do?

If you fled your from your country and if you stay in Berlin now and you want a bike register here.

We will then put you on a waiting list and soon you will get an appointment in our workshop. There, you can choose a bike and repair it with us and our mechanics. As soon as we are done, you will receive a lock and a bike pass and then you are good to go.

I want to donate a bike. How and where can I do that?

You can come to our workshop during opening hours to donate your bike.
Please contact us in advance to make sure that we have room in our basement.

What kind of bikes do you accept?

Any kinds, really. Just make sure that they are actually repairable. Call or write us about it if you are not sure.
Also we do not accept bikes that are or could be stolen. We hand out bike passes with our bikes and we really wouldn’t want a former owner recognizing his bike with a refugee.

How can I donate?

You can make a donation on our webpage via betterplace.org. There are multiple options such as credit card or paypal. You can also find us on betterplace.org itself and donate for our projects there.

Where can I find you?

Our workshop is in Lenaustraße 3 in 12047 Berlin Neukölln. We are part oft he sharehouse „Refugio“ in which refugees, students and artists live and work together. You can find our opening hours here.

Can I find you in other parts of Germany?

Unfortunately, we are restricted to the Berlin area. There are lots of similar organizations throughout Germany though. The blog It started with a fight put together a map with those projects. Maybe you will find one near you.

I would like to join you or support you in some way. How can I do that?

It depends on what you want to do and what you can do. Just write us a message via contact sheet on our page or on facebook or just come and visit us during opening hours in our workshop. We are looking forward to you!

When is your next workshop day?

You can find any appointments on our facebook page.

Why the bike?

Mobility and integration have a lot to do with eachother, we believe. In a city as Berlin what better way is there to achieve both than by bike?
We want to make everyday life for refugees easier and we want to give them the possibility to get to know their new home.
A bicycle doesn’t need fuel, it makes you independent, it’s green, you don’t need a license, many refugees know how to ride a bike and once you have one it costs near to nothing.

How much does it cost Rückenwind to repair a bike?

The bikes we receive are all in different condition. Some need more, some need less fixing. Even though we try to recycle and use parts from our own bike pool, there are several things we just need to buy new regularly such as lights, locks, chains, tires and tools.
Overall we calculate a cost of 30€ per bike.

Why is "Rückenwind - Bicycles for Refugees" sustainable

Our project is sustainable because we try to integrate refugees in the society as well as in the labour market, thereby we would like to become self- financed. Furthermore we want our workshop operations to be leaded by refugees seen in the long- term.

I want to start a project like yours in my area. How can I do that?

We are working on guide that helps new projects to get started. We will answer some of the questions you will encounter along the way.
While we’re still working on that you are more than welcome to contact us if you have any questions of your own.

Who are the people behind Rückenwind?

We are twelve members between the ages of 19 and 31 and we are a mixed group of high school graduates, students and even a former business consultant.
Most importantly, we are friends who’ve known eachother for quite a while and in January 2015 we decided to start an organization.
Joining us are around 30 helpers and mechanics who support our project on workshop days and during opening hours in our workshop.
